Hi,

I installed SearchGuard 5.4.0 but am not sure if it is Enterprise Edition or Community Edition. Is there a way to find out?

Thanks,

Pratiksha

Please have a look at the docs for v5.x:

In 5.x we shipped the Community Edition by default. Any Enterprise modules have to be installed manually. Plus, if you run any enterprise module in 5.x there will be an info message printed to the ES logs stating that you need a license. So unless you did not install any Enterprise module manually you are good to go.

Hi Jochen,

Thanks a lot for your response. From the documentation link that you have mentioned, it appears that there is no segregation between a “Community” Edition and an “Enterprise” Edition for Search Guard 5. So does this mean that we install Search Guard and then depending on what specific Enterprise modules we want to use, we would need to install those separately? Is this a correct assumption?

Also, like we have the 60-day free trial period in the newer Search Guard Enterprise versions, do we have any free trial licenses for the Enterprise Modules in the Search Guard 5 or would we have to buy the license directly?

We get the following message when we start Elasticsearch with Search Guard 5:

**### LICENSE NOTICE Search Guard ###**

**If you use one or more of the following features in production**

**make sure you have a valid Search Guard license**

**(See [Security and Alerting for Elasticsearch and Kibana | Search Guard](https://floragunn.com/searchguard-validate-license))**

**\* Kibana Multitenancy**

**\* LDAP authentication/authorization**

**\* Active Directory authentication/authorization**

**\* REST Management API**

**\* JSON Web Token (JWT) authentication/authorization**

**\* Kerberos authentication/authorization**

**\* Document- and Fieldlevel Security (DLS/FLS)**

**\* Auditlogging**

**In case of any doubt mail to [sales@floragunn.com](mailto:sales@floragunn.com)**

Thanks,

Pratiksha

Yes, this is a correct assumption and that was the way SG5 was working. Since we got a lot of questions about licensing and versions, we decided to make more explicit in SG6 by officially having the Community and Enterprise versions.

The relevant section about installing Enterprise modules in SG5 is here:

>

So if you don’t have installed anything manually, it’s Community. Also, in SG5 every Enterprise module would log something like:

“Search Guard Kibana Multitenancy module is not free software …”

In SG5 you have an unlimited trial period. All modules are fully functional. You need to obtain a license at the point when your installation goes into production.
